The Sky
World-building Wednesday
We might not look up at the sky much, day to day—someone’s got to surf that internet after all—but up is pretty important.
Here’s three skies, three worlds. Earth, some of you may be familiar with…I make no assumptions. Iphigenia—well, when I describe the sky as aqua, and the clouds as golden, I’m not kidding: the aeroplankton in the upper atmosphere (the primary source of Iphigenia’s oxygen), the dust particulates, the yellower sun, all combine to give the sky a green-blue cast. Seoribyeol’s sky resembles Earth’s with a darker shift towards violet because of the more orange color of Epsilon Indi—but behold where the differences really kick in, at dawn or sunset—
Iphigenia truly is strange at sunset and dawn, but I can’t imagine anything much more impressive than Seoribyeol’s blood-red, orange, and purple sky. Pure fantasy worlds, and yet quite plausible. The universe is a curious place!
